Orientation and transition programs

Building confidence early so more students engage, belong and persist

The transition into study is one of the most critical moments in the student journey.

Many students arrive motivated, but without the confidence or internal tools needed to navigate new academic, social and cultural environments. When confidence is low, students disengage quietly, hesitate to ask for help and fall behind before support services are activated.

Student Confidence delivers preventative orientation and transition programs that restore confidence early, supporting stronger engagement and belonging from the outset.

The challenge

Across education settings, institutions report:

  • uneven engagement during orientation

  • low participation from quieter or less confident students

  • delayed help-seeking

  • early disengagement that is difficult to detect

Orientation activities often assume a baseline level of confidence that many students do not yet have.

Where confidence fits

Orientation and transition programs are grounded in the Confidence Restoration Approach.

Rather than fixing students or telling them what to do, the approach restores confidence by strengthening self-belief and decision-making.

Through experiential, human-centred learning, students reconnect with their capacity to make better choices for themselves about study, work and life. This supports engagement that is self-directed, sustainable and aligned with students’ own goals.

Programs are preventative, non-clinical and stigma-free.

What the programs support

Orientation and transition programs help students to:

  • feel more confident attending and participating

  • build a sense of belonging early

  • understand themselves and how they respond to challenge

  • engage more intentionally with study and campus life

  • seek support earlier, without stigma

This creates stronger foundations for retention, engagement and progression.
